It is now commonly believed that if you want to improve your fitness and lead a healthy lifestyle, there is no better exercise to undertake than running. You may not know this, but running is actually one of the most rewarding and effective fitness activities we can do. Did you know, for example, that we use 200 different muscles when taking a running step? We are certain you didn’t know that running actually exercises over 100 ligaments, 30 joints and 25 bones, plus a myriad of blood vessels and nerves – what other activity allows you to achieve that?
Aside from the awesome exercise benefits, running can also contribute to a longer life, and reduce the chances of obtaining high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s. It can obviously help you burn calories, lose weight and tone your muscles. In short, it’s a super activity and it is easy to see why millions of people run on a weekly basis. In the UK for example, over 17 million people regularly run, while in the USA that number amounts to over 10 million people.
To prepare for running, we advise investing a little money in some high quality gear – it is advisable to purchase a sturdy and comfortable pair of running trainers and a set of gym clothes. In fact, at the moment you can grab get a discount on a good pair of running shoes with a walking company and save quite a bit of money. Just make sure that the shoes should your ankles properly and have a comfortable sole in order to prevent unnecessary injury (style is optional, not a necessity!). Your gym clothes should also be comfortable, allow free movement and your body to breath properly. We also advise brushing up on your running technique and learning some warm-up routines to avoid injury or muscle strains.
